Davidson County recently marked the opening of Congressman Addison McDowell's new office at 30 E. 1st Ave, Lexington, NC. The office aims to enhance accessibility for constituents. However, the event has drawn attention due to concerns regarding transparency. A previous article in Davidson Local about the event was retracted after McDowell's communications team disputed the accuracy of quotes attributed to his newsletter. An offer to provide a direct quote was extended.

"Congressman McDowell is here to serve the people of North Carolina's 6th District…The office will be by appointment only. Same-day appointments are available, and we encourage anyone in need of assistance to call (336) 333-5005 to schedule a meeting with a member of his team,” according to McDowell’s staff.
“So far this year, Congressman McDowell's office has already connected with over 50,000 constituents and helped more than 220 individuals through casework. The congressman and his staff look forward to continuing to serve and assist the residents of North Carolina's 6th District."

Former political candidate and U.S. Navy veteran Scott Huffman is leading a protest against Congressman McDowell, citing concerns over accessibility and transparency. Huffman and his group, known for their "Missing Congressman" billboards and social media campaigns, have been vocal critics of McDowell’s engagement with constituents.

According to Huffman, a group of concerned citizens invited McDowell to a town hall discussion on March 19th to address pressing issues within the community. However, on the same date, McDowell’s staff scheduled a grand opening event at a location in close proximity to the planned protest site. The scheduling conflict has further fueled questions regarding McDowell’s availability and willingness to engage directly with constituents.

McDowell's team has not responded to inquiries regarding the planned protest addressing issues such as Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, Veteran Benefits, and international support for Ukraine and European allies. Constituents have expressed the need for increased accountability and engagement from their representative.

McDowell stated that opening the office is designed to provide constituents with access. In his newsletter, he also warns constituents not to trust the media.

According to McDowell’s newsletter, “Recent reports in the media that the Social Security Administration (SSA) is permanently closing local field offices are false. Since January 1, 2025, the agency has not permanently closed or announced the permanent closure of any local field office.” Davidson Local could not verify this information from the section titled, “Correcting the Record about Social Security Office Closings,” but made several Freedom of Information Act Requests.

Protest Details:

  • Date: Wednesday, April 2nd

  • Time: 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM

  • Location: NC 06 District Office, 30 E. 1st Ave, Lexington, NC 27292

According to Huffman, the rally provides an opportunity for community members to address their concerns and advocate for the preservation of essential social programs.
