Nearly 500 Davidson County Voters Affected by Party Affiliation Changes

Davidson County voters are being impacted by recent changes in party affiliations due to shifts in the North Carolina Board of Elections' recognition of smaller political parties. As of June 24, 2025, about 34,000 voters across North Carolina will be moved to Unaffiliated status due to changes in the recognition of smaller political parties. These parties, including the Constitution, Justice for All, No Labels, and We the People parties, failed to meet the state’s required thresholds for recognition. Specifically, they did not secure at least 2% of the total vote in the 2024 gubernatorial or presidential election.

In a point of clarification to Davidson Local Davidson County Board of Elections Director Andrew wrote: “Voters who were previously affiliated with a political party that is no longer recognized in North Carolina do not need to take any action unless they wish to update their registration. These individuals remain registered voters; however, their affiliation will be changed to “unaffiliated” effective tomorrow, as their most recent registration was with a now-unrecognized party.”

Voters who would like to affiliate with a currently recognized political party may do so at any time by submitting an updated North Carolina Voter Registration Form.

In Davidson County, voters affiliated with the Constitution Party (15 voters), Justice for All Party (13 voters), No Labels Party (425 voters), and We the People Party (42 voters) will be moved to Unaffiliated status unless they update their registration.

The Green Party was able to retain its recognized status after it presented evidence that its presidential candidate, Jill Stein, appeared on the November 2024 ballot in 38 states, surpassing the required threshold of having a candidate on the ballot in at least 35 states. This was enough to allow the Green Party to retain its recognition, even though Stein ran as an independent in seven of those states.

Voters affected by these changes may choose to either affiliate with one of North Carolina's recognized political parties or remain Unaffiliated, which means they do not associate with any party. Voters who wish to update their registration can complete a new North Carolina Voter Registration Form, available on the Davidson County Board of Elections website or in person at their office, located at 945 N. Main Street, Suite A, Lexington, NC 27292.

It is crucial for Davidson County voters to update their registrations as soon as possible to ensure they can participate in future elections. Voters affiliated with specific parties may only vote in that party's primary, while Unaffiliated voters have the flexibility to choose any party’s primary ballot or a nonpartisan ballot, if available. In the general election, all voters can select any candidate regardless of party affiliation.
