Smoke alarms available for Lexington residents

Having working smoke alarms in your home can provide early notification in the event of a fire, which allow occupants more time to escape. Smoke alarm safety is important for protecting your family from fire.

Here are some tips for smoke alarm safety:

  • Install smoke alarms everywhere: Install smoke alarms on every level of your home, including the basement. You should also install them in every bedroom and outside of each sleeping area.

  • Test smoke alarms regularly: Test your smoke alarms at least once a month.

  • Replace batteries: Replace the batteries in your smoke alarms at least once a year. You can change the batteries when you reset your clocks in the spring or fall.

  • Replace smoke alarms: Replace your smoke alarms every 10 years.

  • Install interconnected smoke alarms: Install smoke alarms that are interconnected so that when one sounds, they all sound.

  • Mount smoke alarms high: Mount smoke alarms high on the ceiling or wall, at least 10 feet away from cooking appliances.

  • Avoid drafts: Avoid installing smoke alarms near fresh air vents, ceiling fans, or drafty areas.

  • Know what to do when the alarm sounds: If your smoke alarm sounds, immediately exit your home and call 9-1-1.

  • Make sure everyone knows what to do: Make sure everyone in your home knows the sound of the alarm and what to do if they hear it.

If you are a resident of the City of Lexington, NC and need working smoke alarms, please call our Fire Marshal’s Office at 336-248-3933 and leave a message and we will schedule a time to install FREE alarms in your home.
