Health department offering vaccines at Juneteenth event
On Saturday, June 19 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m., the Davidson County Health Department (DCHD) will be administering COVID-19 vaccines at the Juneteenth Celebration. It will be held at 4th St. Park, located at 412 4th St., Lexington. There is no cost to receive a vaccine.
Janna H. Walker, DCHD public health strategist and public information officer, discussed how the health department’s clinic goal is to branch out to different locations to vaccinate people in the area. They want to take the clinic to the next level when it comes to the health of citizens in Davidson County. Currently, 31% of Davidson County residents have been fully vaccinated.
“This event is an excellent opportunity to connect with our community,” Walker stated. “We hope at a minimum we will educate youth and their parents about COVID-19 vaccines. We’re also excited to have the opportunity to vaccinate individuals attending the event that would like a COVID vaccine.”
The shots are available for individuals, ages 12 and older. The Pfizer vaccine will be given to citizens ages 12 and up. Attendees age 18 and up are eligible for the Moderna and J&J vaccines. Additionally, there will be COVID testing available with results coming within 48 hours.
Adding vaccinations to the Juneteenth Celebration is one of the various ways the event has been designed to bring together people in the community. Anything for Our Youth Group founder, Tina Royal, has collaborated with community organizations to host the evening of learning, fellowship and fun..
“We are bringing unity in our community,” explained Royal. “Bringing everybody together to educate, celebrate and partake in food celebration, vendors and music. Nonprofit organizations, civic groups, clubs, fraternities, sororities, church groups and other organizations are coming out and join this community event by setting up tables and sharing information about their organizations.”
If you’re unable to attend Saturday’s event and wish to be vaccinated, the health department is open Monday through Friday. Pfizer vaccines will be administered Monday 8:30 a.m. to 7p m., Tuesday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Thursday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Friday from 8:30 to 4:30 p.m. The Moderna and Pfizer vaccines will be given on Wednesday from 8:30 to 4:30 p.m. The DCHD is located at 915 Greensboro St in Lexington.
