Food Is Medicine? What That Really Means — And Why It Matters This Weekend in Lexington

You’ve probably heard someone say “food is medicine.” But what does that actually mean?

Put simply: the stuff we eat can help us feel better, live longer, and avoid some of the health issues that run in so many families — things like high blood pressure, diabetes, and heart disease. And no, we’re not talking about fancy vitamins or special diets. We’re talking about real food — fresh fruits and veggies, whole grains, lean meats, herbs, and more.

This Saturday, May 24, the Lexington Farmers Market is bringing that idea to life. The event will be held from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the market in downtown Lexington. It’s hosted by Fiddletree Farm and Nursery and will focus on how food can support better health and wellness.

Doctors and health experts are starting to talk more about food as a way to help people stay healthy — not just to treat problems after they show up. Studies show that eating better can help with things like weight, energy, blood sugar, and even mental health.

“We hear people say, ‘I want to eat better, I just don’t know where to start,’” said one of the market organizers. “That’s why events like this are so important — they give folks tools they can actually use.”

At Saturday’s market, you’ll find fresh produce, herbs, plants, and advice on how to eat well on a budget. Fiddletree Farm will be on hand with tips on cooking, gardening, and using herbs to support your body — from reducing stress to boosting immunity.

There’s no need for a health degree or a big grocery budget. Just come ready to learn, shop, and maybe try something new.

The Lexington Farmers Market — like a lot of local markets — also helps folks get access to healthy food they might not find in regular stores. Some vendors accept EBT/SNAP and offer lower prices than big chain grocery stores.

This isn’t about trends. It’s about simple, real food that can help us take care of ourselves and each other.
