A routine arrest attempt turned violent Tuesday morning when a Davidson County Sheriff's deputy shot a wanted individual following an altercation.

According to a press release from the Davidson County Sheriff's Office, the incident occurred around 11:15 a.m. at a residence in the Pilot community. The deputy was attempting to serve an arrest warrant when a struggle broke out between the officer and the suspect. During the confrontation, the deputy discharged their firearm, striking the wanted individual.

Both the deputy and the suspect sustained injuries and were transported to medical facilities for treatment. Their conditions have not been disclosed.

Authorities have not released the identities of those involved or the specific location of the shooting. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) has been called in to conduct an independent investigation, as is standard protocol in officer-involved shootings.
