Schools locked down due to threat of weapons
West Davidson High School and Tyro Middle School went on lockdown briefly Friday morning after a student was found on campus with two plastic handguns, according to the dropoff around Davidson County Sheriff’s Office. Officials stated school staff were alerted during the morning 7:30 a.m. that astudent possibly had a weapon at the high school, and quickly implemented a lockdown of both schools Representatives with the sheriff’s office said SRO officers detained a student trying to leave theWest Davidson High School campus, and was found with two plastic toy handguns in theirbackpack.The lockdown of both schools was lifted around 9 a.m., and no injuries were reported. The names of the students will not be released because they are underage. Due to the incident, the school resource officers are in the process of charging the student with resisting arrest, communicating threats towards the SRO, and disorderly conduct. The student was released to his parents. Representatives with Davidson County Schools said in a written statement that the safety andsecurity of students are a priority, and there was no risk of danger to anyone at the time of theincident.“School administrators and law enforcement acted swiftly and decisively to address thissituation and ensure the well-being of everyone on campus.The school district is committed tomaintaining a safe and secure learning environment,” said representatives of Davidson County Schools. They also urged students and parents to remain vigilant to prevent potentially dangerous situations, and to monitor social media accounts to discourage the spread of misinformation.“We encourage all parents to speak with students about the importance of making gooddecisions and leaving anything that looks like a weapon at home,” said Davidson County Schools.
